Cylinder Phonograph
Thomas Edison came up with the idea of the Cylinder Phonograph in 1877, while working on another machine. He was working on a machine that would transcribe telegraphic messages through indentations on paper tape, which could later be sent over the telegraph. He realized that a telephone message could be recorded in a similar way. With some tweaks to the other machines design, Edison invented the Cylinder Phonograph. -

Kinetophones and Kinetoscopes.

The kinetophone united sound and sight through "talking" motion pictures. The kinetophones and kinetoscopes were actually one device. When looking through the kinetoscope to see the film, the sound was heard from the kinetophone. -
Projectors and the Vitascope

The kinetoscopes were very popular even when the vitascope (a projector system) had come out. However, vitoscopes did draw in larger crowds to make a bigger profit. The vitoscope was first displayed in New York City.
