Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio. His parents were Samuel Ogden Edison Jr. and Nancy Mathews Elliott. As a kid he attended a private school when his family moved to port Huron, Michigan. His teacher deemed that Thomas was a "difficult" student. His mother pulled him away from school and started teaching him at home. As he got into his thirty's he attended a school called Cooper Union from 1875-1879. -

During Thomas Edisons time many things happened such as the ratification of the thirteenth amendment. on January 31, 1865 the thirteenth amendment was passed by congress. on December 6, 1865 the thirteenth amendment was ratified. Edisons 1093 patients
In 1868, Thomas Edison was granted his first of 1093 patients for his electronic vote recorder. Thomas was awarded 1,093 U.S. patents across a wide variety of technologies. Edison had two great periods where his patent applications soared which were from 1872-1890, and 1897-1912.

The Franco-Prussian War, was a war in 1870-1871. The war was lost by France to the German states under the leadership of Prussia. The war was a conflict between the Second French Empire of Napoleon III and the German states of the North German Confederation led by the Kingdom of Prussia.

Edison establishes invention factory
In 1876, Thomas Edison establishes an invention factory in Menlo Park, New Jersey. Edison lab was the first instiution set up for the express purpose of producing technological innovations and scientific research. His invention was the electric pen. The electric pen was a primitive version of a coping machine. When a person were to write with the pen on a piece of paper, the pen would make tiny wholes creating a stencil.

Edison invents the phonograph
In 1877, Edison invented the early phonograph . Thomas Edison had been rivals wih Alexander Gram bell for their inventions. When Edison invented the phonograph Bell was very jealous of the invention.Thomas was confident that he had an invention to rival Bells telephone in popularity. Bell agreed that edisns invention was more popular.

13 hour burning lightbulb
In 1789, Edison made an incandescent bulb that burned for 13 hours. Thomas designed a practical electric lighting system. He did thousands of experiments but after 13 months he was able to make an incandescent bulb that burned for 13 hours. This invention was Thomas Edison's most important invention.

First permanent power station opens
In 1882, Edison's first permanent power station opened on New Yorks pearl street in September. There were many difficulties when trying to get the building up and running because there were problems with the wiring, the generators, and the other parts of the system. This building was where Edison's invention of the light bulb was tested positive. 1/3 of the building was covered in light. Two weeks later the other two floors were ready for illumination.

Edisons war of electric currents
In 1888, Edison launches the "War of the Electric Currents" against rival George Westinghouse. Edison's direct current was the standard for the United States during the time. Edison carried out a campaign to discourage the use of alternating current, including spreading misinformation on fatal alternating current accidents, publicly killing animals, and lobbying against the use of AC in state legislatures.

Electric company is established
In 1889, the Edison general establishes the Electric Company. By 1890, Thomas Edison had brought together several of his business interests under one corporation to form Edison General Electric. General Electric was formed by the 1892 combination of Edison's company and also Thomson-Houston Company. -

On the date of august 31,1897, Thomas Edison received a patent for the kinetographic camera. In 1891, Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope. This invention could made people able to watch short, simple films. The kinetograph and kinetoscope were both first publicly exhibited on May 20, 1891.

Boy scouts of America is established
On February 8, 1910 Boy Scouts of America was created.The Boy Scouts is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with more than 2.4 million youth members and nearly one million adult volunteers. Boy scouts has taught many kids the safety a how to hunt in the woods with certain materials they need in order to do so.

Thomas Edison dies
On October 18, 1931, Edison died in West Orange, New Jersey in his home. He died of complications of diabetes. Thomas was 84. Edison wont be forgotten as he changed the world by his inventions. The most significant was the incandescent light bulb.
