A legend was born
Webster was born in the little town of Salsbury, New Hampshire, to Ebenezer and Abigail Webster. Ebeneezer was a succesful small politician being part of the state legislature. -
Childhood
Webster was the 9th child of ten, to his parents. He grew up on a farm that his father, Ebeneezer ran himself with help from his children. Daniel Webster was not the athletic type and soon realized he was not suit for farming, and knew it was nessecary to recieve an education. Therefore, he enrolled into phillips Exter Academy a prep school to land him a college education. -
Dartmouth College
Daniel Webster gets accepted into dartmouth college at the age of 15, he would go on to graduate in 4 years. -
Graduation
Daniel Webster garduated from dartmouth college, and begins study of law under Thomas W. Tompson. He was active in his education, being influential on his peers, reciting speeches to his class. -
First exposure to politics
Webster moved to Boston in 1804 to clerk for an attorney Christopher Gore. He would go on to meet numerous politions from New England and used this as a learning experience. -
Webster Practice
After a succesful run of learning experiences Webster started his own practice in Boscawan, New Jersey. -
Moving Practice
Webster moves his practice to Portsmouth and lets his brother, ezikiel, take over his Boston practice right out of school. -
Marriage
Webster marries Grace Fletcher in 1808, they would have 5 kids and live together until her death in 1828 -
House of Representitives
In the wake of the War of 1812, Webster lands his first big political position being elected to the house of representitives as a strong federilists. -
Term Ends
After serving two terms in the house of representitives, websters terms were over, he was influential in the fact that he opposed the madisen adminstration's war policy. -
Supreme Court Case
Defends his former school Dartmouth College in the Dartmouth Colleve vs. Woodward Supreme Court Case. The dispute was between the private dartmouth college that was given a grant by King George was directly about to be changed into a public university, but under the contract clause, they could not do this legally. Webster petitioned succesfully, saving the college in a very emotional case. -
Election
After moving to Boston in 1816, Webster gains a reputation and is elcted to house in 1822 -
Senator
Webster would be back at capitol hill again, only this time he would be a senator, for the state of massachusetts. -
Presidency?
After two highly successful terms the massachusetts people were very impressed and the massachusetts legislature had nomitnated him for presidency. -
Secretary
After several unsuccessful attemps at presidency, Webster became Secretary of State under William Henry Harrison, a fellow Whig party memeber. -
New President
After Harrisons death just 32 days into office vice president John Tyler presumed the role of President, ironically webster was offered the Vice President job when Harrison was the Whig canidate but declined, had he of accepted he would have been a president. Webster remained as secretary of state under Tyler. -
Turnover?
After a split in the Whig party over the national bank all of John Tyler's cabinet ressigned from office, except Webster. -
Resignation
After resolving the tension between a border dispute between England and the US, he was influentia and created a peace that would last forever in 1842 with the Webster-Ashburn treaty, he was pressured by the whig party to ressign, and ressign he did. -
Reelection
He would be re-elected agin as a senator from Massachusetts. -
Secretary Part 2
Webster would yet again become Secretary of state under Millard Fillmore, this term would not be as succesful as hs first time in office. -
Death
Webster died at his home in Marshfield, one of the most influential federalists in the 19th century had died.
