    This was The War of Pacific and was fought with Chile but they were unsuccessful.
  • Dictation in Peru

    After 20 years of dictatorship Peru emerged and had a free election for the first time.
  • President José Luis Bustamente y Rivero

    Jose Rivero was the first president in Peru in many decades.
  • The end of the first president...

    Jose Rivero wserved for three years and then was succeeded in turn by Gen. Manuel A. Odria, Manuel Prado y Ugarteche, and Fernando Belaúnde Terry.
  • Succeeded Again

    Belaúnde was overthrown by Gen. Juan Velasco Alvarado
  • Replaced by the Prime!

    Velasco was replaced in a bloodless coup by his prime minister, Gen. Francisco Morales Bermudez, who promised to restore civilian government.

    The Maoist guerrilla group Shining Path, or Sendero Luminoso, began their brutal campaign to overthrow the government

    About 69,000 people were killed during the wars between rebel groups and the government.
