Philip II of Spain (1527-1598), son of Charles V, was king of a vast empire that included territories in Europe, America, and Asia. A defender of Catholicism, he led the Counter-Reformation and faced conflicts like the rebellion in the Netherlands and the Spanish Armada against England. His reign strengthened Spain's power but also began certain economic problems. -
