War Hawks begin calling for war against the British.
The land hungry War Hawks call for war with the British. This is so that they could, hopefully, seize Canada, and stop British impressment of American sailors. They are not without opposition. -
Orders of Council Repealed
British Impressment of American sailors ends with the Orders of Council. These had allowed the British navy to capture and force Americans into naval service on the grounds of them being 'deserters'. Though they were often correct in their assumptions, it was still damaging and offensive to the young United States. -
The War of 1812 begins
Congress, under President James Madison, declares war against the British Empire. This would end in a stalemate, with no real victor, and the only real loser was the native tribes involved. The British abandon all hope of regaining the American colonies. -
British suffer a series of naval defeats to the Americans
The HMS Guerriere was destroyed in a battle with the USS Constitution, additionally, the HMS Macedonian was shot into submission by the USS United States, and the USS Constitution destroyed the HMS Java. -
Treaty of Ghent is signed
The war of 1812 is officially ended. It restored the borders and relations to their pre-war states. Status quo ante bellum. The war was a stalemate, and the US had fended off the British Empire. -
The Battle of New Orleans is won
Though it occurred after the war had officially ended, the Battle of New Orleans was a decisive American victory. Andrew Jackson was the brilliant American commander, who had bested, and killed Sir Edward Pakenham, the Major General of the British forces. This victory boosted American morale, and also aided the misconception that the US won the war, not tied it. This ends the final British bid for control of the American colonies. -
The Transcontinental Treaty is signed
The US purchased the rest of Florida from Spain, further weakening Spain's colonial power in the US. This was in exchange for the definition of the western border of the US. -
The Monroe Doctrine is created
The Monroe doctrine is a declaration of American hostility to future European colonization of the western hemisphere. The US would not interfere with current European colonies, but intended to stop future ones to be created. This was, at the time, just a gesture of goodwill to the new Latin American republics. -
US signs treaty with Russia to open areas off the coast of Alaska to trade.
US and Russia sign a treaty, removing Russian claims south of the present southern limit of Alaska. Russia also opened trade to and from the region. -
The Tariff of Abominations is put into effect
Tariff on primarily British made goods. This protected Northern manufacturing. This further distanced the US from the British, but made Southern states angry.
