  • President Madison takes office

    Since their was a new president, tension was growing between U.S and Britain. America was still angry at Britain from impressing their sailors. They were also mad because of the whole arming the Native Americans with guns buisness.
  • War Hawks Take Power

    War hawks Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun were elected leaders of The House of Reps.Then War Hawks were demoted in New England. The war hawks didn't exist in New England because they relied on trade for their basic needs and the war would hurt trade.
  • Relations with Great Britain Worsen

    In the spring of 1812 Britain told the U.S that they would continue impressing sailors. Britain decided to arm the angry Native Americans. Then since the natives were angry at the U.S the natives attacked them.
  • Congress Declares War on Great Britian

    The U.S decided to declare war while Britain was still at war in Europe.However , Britain didn't except the American demands to avoid war so they accepted. Natives agreed to help Briain by guarding Canada for them.
  • America isn't Ready for War

    It accured to the in the second day that they were so cocky that they didn't remember Jefferson's changes. When Jefferson was president he changed the size of the military/navyand the bugdet. So in other words Congress made a big mistake.
  • Britain Blockades American Ports

    In the first days of war, Britain set up blockades on the U.S. ports. The blockades were made up of 135 warships. After reiniforcing British troops they were able to block off all American ports.
  • Invasion of Canada

    The invasion of Canada was demanded before the war even started. They expected Canadians to welcome the overthrow of Britain, but they didn't. Then in July, General William Hull leads a force of American troops to Canada. British General Isaac Brock took advatage of the confusion and captured more than 2,000 soldiers.
  • USS Constitution scores a victory

    In the beginning of the war their was already a fierce sea battle. It was fought between the USS Constitution and the Guerriere. The sailors nicknamed the USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" because British artillery bounced right off the thick wooden hull.
  • Battle of Lake Erie

    Even though America lost the invasion of Canada both sides knew how important it was to control the Great Lakes in the war. The battle took place on the western side of Lake Erie. American commander, Oliver Hazard Perry's flagship was badly damaged. So after that ship sank he kept on switching ships until he won the battle.
  • Battle of Thames

    The Battle of Thames was on accident. It happened after the Battle of Lake Erie when the British and Natives retreated from Detroit. Then General William Henry Harrison pursued the British and their native allies into Canada where the Battle of Thames occured.
  • Battle of Horshoe Bend

    Creek warriors attacked in the south, but when it came to Horseshoe Bend came they were ready. Andrew Jackson rose up to become commander of the force. After they won that battle made the Creek warriors give up miilions of acres of land.
  • Washington D.C Attacked and Burned

    The British's plan was to attack and burn down Washington D.C. Then later on they followed that plan and sent a force to destroy the capital.The British ste fire to many important buildings including the White House while Dolley Madison (James Madison's wife) fled with the presidents important papers.
  • Attack on Baltimore

    After the attack on Washington they moved to attack Baltimore. The main objective in Baltimore was Fort McHenry that defended Baltimore's harbor. Throughout the night British warships bombarded Fort McHenry with artillery.
  • Writing of the Star-Spangled Banner

    While during the attack on Batimore a young sailor named Francis Scott Key saw that the American flag on the fort in Baltimore. So he started to write a song and put it in the newspaper. In 1931 it became the U.S. national anthem.
  • Hartford Convention

    It began when Britain said that they where tired and requested a peace treaty. As news of a peace trearty was in Ghent headed their way delegates were debating on if they should end the war and restore trade, or keep going and keep the war hawks happy yet unhealthy economy. So when the time came James Madison ended the war.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    This treaty decided the attitude of America. if excepted then they would have a good healthy economy. of denied then their would be a very unhappy northside of America. so James Madison thought about it and excepted the offer.
  • Battle of New Orleans

    Ths event occured during the Hartford Convention. During the war Britain had control of the missippi trading route by controling New Orleans. So General Andrew Jackson attacked and succed on January 8, 1815.
