President Madison Takes Office
American were angry at Britain for arming Native Americans in the Northwest. Americans resented impressment of sailors by the British. Tension with the British was high. Americans felt a new sense of nationalism. The countrys honor was in stake. -
War Hawks take Power
War Hawks- those who were eager for war in Britain. Oppisition in war was strongest in New England. New Englanders believed war with Britain would harm the American and there trade. War Hawks had a strong sense of nationalism. They wanted to fight a war to defend American rights. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
The British told the Untied States they would continue impressing sailors. Native American began new attacks on frontier settlements in the Northwest. Congress declared war on Britain. For the British war did not start at a good time, because they were in a war at Europe. Britian was not willing to meet Americans demands to avoid war. -
Congress Declares war on Britain
The House votes 79 to 49 on war. The senate vote was 19 to 13. Americans discovered that winning the war would be as easy as declaring it. Madison at last given into war fever. Tons of Americans welcomed the new of the war with Britain. -
America is not ready for War
The navy had 16 shiped to fight against the huge British army. The army was small and ill equipped. A lot of the officers knew little about the military. Jefferson believed in a small federal government and reduced spending on defense. United States faced difficulties on its own. -
Britain blockades American ports
A blockade is the action of shutting a port or road to prevent people or supplies from coming into and area or leaving it. The British had 135 warships blockading American ports. British was able to close off all American ports by war's end. The British continued to board American ships and impress American seamen. They blockaded to prevent Americans from trading with France. -
Invasion of Canada
Troops under General Willian Hull invaded Canada from Detroit. Hull was not sure what would happen, so he retreated fearing he did not have enough soldiors. General Isaac Brock's Brtish and Native American soldiors surronded hulls army and forced them to surrender. The British captured more than 2,000 soldiers. It was a big defeat for the United States. -
USS Constitution scores a victory
American sailors nicknamed the constitution "Old Ironsides." They named them that because British artillery for bounced off ships wooden hull. To the Americans it seemed the constitution was iron. A major sea battle was fought at the beginning of war. It was a very fierce battle. -
Battle of lake erie
British batered Perry's ship and left it helpless. Perry took there flag down and rowed over to another American ship. Perry raised the colors again and continued to battle. The Americans won the battle. Perry wrote: "We have met the enemy and they are ours." -
Battle of Themes
The Americans won this battle. Tecumseh died in the fighting. Without Tecumseh leadership the Indian confederation soon fell apart. Tecumseh allies still fight against the settlers. Andrew Jackson put the Americans in war. -
Horseshoe Bend
Jackson defended the creeks. The treaty that ended the fighting forced the creeks to give up millions of land. The Native Americans suffered defeat in the south. Andrew Jackson took command of American forces in Georgia. Creek warriors attcked several American settlements. -
Washington d.c, Attacked and burned
British set fire to several government bulidings, including the white house. Americans were shocked to learn that thier armys could not win. British went to Baltimore. They first went to Fort Mchenry. President fled the white house. -
Attack on Baltimore
The British came to Baltimore. There first objective was Fort Mcltenery, which defended city harbor. British bombarded the fort though the nights. The Americans had beaten off the attack. Key saw the Americans flag over the fort. -
Writing of the Star Spangled Banner
Francis Scott Key, a young American wrote the star spangled banner. Poem became popular and was set to music. Congress made it the national Anthem of the US. Writien on the back of a envelope. It told the story of his nights watch. -
Hartford Convention
People suggest that New England states secede, or withdraw. News of the peace treaty arrived. They did not like the Republican President and the war. Delegates from around New England met in Hartford. They left the union. -
Treaty of Ghent
This ended the war. The Treaty turned things to the way they were before. News of this treaty took several weeks to reach the US. They fought one more battle. Peace talks began in Ghent, Belguim. -
Battle of New Orleans
General Andrew Jackson won a stunning victory. British were prapared for the battle. Only Americans died. Jackson was already waiting for the British. Americans built treaches.
