    The Vikings came from three countries of Scandinevia, Norway, Denmark and Sweden. The name Viking comes from a language called 'Old Norse' and means a pirate raid.

    The Vikings landed in a coastal area of America called Vinland in approximately 1000AD. The expedition was led by Leif Eriksson. This was a warm, wooded area south of the Canadian coastline. However Eriksson didn’t realise that he had discovered North America, almost 500 years before Columbus. They named it ‘Vinland’ (Wineland), as one of the crew members found ‘wine berries’ on the island which were later named grapes

    In this clash, Brian Boru and the forces of Munster together with Viking allies were pitched against the Viking armies of Dublin, Máel Mórda mac Murchada, King of Leinster and Viking mercenaries from Iceland and Normandy, the Orkney Islands and the Isle of Man.     The Vikings attacked the Christian monastrey at Lindisfarne in Northumbria north east England. Northumbria was an English kingdom and it's monastries were famous for books are and treasures. On a January day the Vikings arrived in their longships and attacked. They burned buildings, stole treasures and murdered a lot of people.

    Vikings travelled south into Russia for trade with Constantinople. They raided the roman territory surrounding Constantinople because they were attracted by the riches of Constantinople and the Arab world, A number of Wars broke out and some of these resulting in benificial trade treaties being formed.

This date may have been chosen specifically because it was All Saints Day, (an important festival in York when many people would have been in the cathedral), This making a surprise attack even more effective and it was a success for the Vikings. They took over York even thought the kings were not captured.

    A battle fought in Limerick Junction in county Tipperary, Ireland between the Dal gCais ( an army led by Brian Boru and his brother Mahon) and the Vikings (led by King Ivar). The Battle ended in a truce amongst both sides.
