  • Creation of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam

    After Japan had surrendered on september 2nd 1945, the Viet Minh entered Hanoi. The democratic republic of Vietnam would be proclaimed on september 2nd 1945. They would establish a new country and replace the Nguyen dynasty.
  • Creation of the 17th parallel between North and South Vietnam

    A dividing line between North and South Vietnam would be established. The 1954 Geneva Conference would be the one to establish this. The 17th parallel would be created as a temporary military separation line.

    Battle of Dien Bien Phu

    The French garrison at Dien Bien Phu in Vietnam fell after a four month siege led by Vietnamese nationalist Ho Chi Minh. A Viet Minh anti-aircraft made it impossible for supplies to reach the French. The French would be overrun after a two-month siege.
  • Establishment of the National Liberation Front

    Was formed on 12/20/1960 to affect the overthrowing of the south vietnamese government and reunification of north and south vietnam. The Viet Cong would be the ones to create this. They would reach out to those of the south vietnamese society who were displeased with the government.

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident and Resolution

    North Vietnamese warships would attack US warships on two separate occasions in the gulf of tonkin. This would lead the U.S. to engage more in the war. It would be resolved when congress passed that President Johnson can take any measures he believed were necessary.

    Operation Rolling Thunder

    The US air force and Navy aircraft engaged in a bombing campaign that was designed to force Ho Chi Minh to stop trying to take over south vietnam. They weren't able to effectively stop North Vietnam's supply routes to the south. So it failed because it didn't achieve its goal.
  • US combat troops arrive in Vietnam

    The first batch of American combat troops arrive in Vietnam. There are 3,500 Marines.

    Tet Offensive

    It was a coordinated series of North Vietnamese attacks on more than 100 cities in South Vietnam. It was attempt to stir up the rebellion among the South Vietnamese population. It was also done to encourage the US to scale back its involvement.
  • My Lai Massacre

    The mass murder of unarmed South Vietnamese civilians by the US troops. More than 500 people were killed based on estimations. The Charlie Company was ordered to enter the village for a search and destroy mission.

    1968 Democratic National Convention

    The Democratic National Convention was held on August 26-29 at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago. A protest had happened at said convention that was protesting the war. There were tens to thousands of protesters battling the police in the streets.
  • 1968 Presidential Election

    It was the 46th presidential election. The people running were George McGovern,against Hubert Humphrey. Humphrey would be the one to win in the end
  • Kent State University Protest

    The Kent State massacre had happened on May 4th. 4 had been killed and 9 were wounded and all were university students. They had been killed by the Ohio National Guard.
