A group of pilgrims sailed from england to America, "the New Word", on the ship the Mayflower.the pilgrims left England because they wanted religious and political freedom. -
Plymouth
The pilgrims saw land in the distance. When the ship finally reached land some pilgrims left to explore the area. They saw a good place a good place and decided to build a village there. later they called the village Plymouth. -
The Declaration of independence
The colonies declared independence from Great Britain, their leaders published the Declaration of Independence on this date. Then, the fighting started. The colonies, led by George Washington, fougth many long, difficult Battles.Iin the end, the defeated the British and signed the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The called their new nation the United Estates of America (USA). -
The Declaration of independence
The French still ownes some lands to the west of their colonies. In 1803, the French Emperor Napoleon offered to sell the land to the United States for $15 millions. The president, Thomas Jefferson,acepted the offer and signed the Louisiana Purchase Ageement. This doubled the size of the country and people started to move west. -
The Trail of Tears
As the New Word expanded, the native American population began to suffer. Their land and tradition were in danger. in the 1830's, the US Government created the first Indian territory in the area now called Oklahoma. They forced more than 15.000 Cherokee people to leave their homes in Georgia and walk 1.600 kilometres to their new territory. Around 4.000 Cherokees people died on the way and they called this journey the "Trail of Tears" -
Problems in the country
In 1860, the people in the north lived in towns, and the people in south they lived on plantations and owned slaves. The plantation owners wanted to keep their slaves, but the people in the north wanted to abolish slavery.
The president in that time was Abrahan Lincoln, and he wanted to end slavery. The people in the south wanted to leave the Union and have their own nation, called the confederacy. But Lincoln wanted to keep the country together. -
The beginning of the Civil War
The south had their Confederaty.it had got 11 states. They thought they were a different nation from the Union in the north. Confederate soldiers attacked a Union fort called Fort Sumter. So they were at war. That war was terrible. Thousands of people died. Both people in the north and the south were suffering. -
The ending of the Civil War
General Robert E. Lee, the Confederate army leader, surrendered to General Ulisses Grant, the Union army leader. After this, the war end with more than 600.000 Americans dead.The slaves were free and the country is one nation.
