    This year, the Congress of the United States founded the agency within the Department of Justice. It was assigned with the “management and regulation of all Federal penal and correctional institutions”, assuming this way the Superintendent of Prisons’ responsibilities to oversight, manage and administrate the 11 Federal prisons in operation.

    In this year, the Bureau of Prisons started to develop other responsibilities, as the number of facilities almost doubled. Now, instead of operating large facilities that confined inmates of different security levels, they operated facilities that confined inmates with similar security levels.

    As a result of the multiple efforts and new legislation that altered the sentencing in the Federal criminal justice system, by the Government of the United States, the inmate population drastically increased.

    After the first decline in the inmate population occurred in 2014, a variety of legislative changes started to happen. One of them being the "First Step Act", which contributed to maintaining its decline.
