XYZ Affair
A meeting between two American diplomats and French officials to defuse tention between the U.S. and France. The French foreign minister sent three agents (XYZ) to demand payment of money from the Americans before French officials would agree to meet them. The U.S. saw this as bribary and were disgusted by French Actions.

Convention of 1800
A peace agreement signed by France and the United States that restored peace between the two nations.

Louisiana Purchase
Purchased by President Jefferson from Napoleon of France. For $15 million dollars, Jefferson doubled the size of the United States.

Embargo Act
Passed by President Jefferson in an effort to keep the United States out of foreign trouble. This act basically stopped trade between the United States and the waring nations of France and Great Britain. However, the Embargo Act was a disaster and created unplanned economic hardship for the United States.

War of 1812
British impressment of American Soldiers causes a major war between the United States and Great Britain. Many battles were fought in this war and unfortunately occured on United States land. The White House was burned to the ground during this war, which lasted until 1814.

Treaty of Ghent
Treaty signed to end the War of 1812, The treaty ended the war without presenting any gains for either side. It essntially returned things to how they were before the war began.

Monroe Doctrine
Issued by President James Monroe during the Era of Good Feelings in the United States. This doctrine basicially stated that the United States would not tolerate European interference in the affiars of any independent nation in the Americas. It also said that the Americas were no longer open for further colonization and the United States would see such attempts as an attack. This doctine made it very clear that the United States was not a country to be reckoned with.
