The United States as a World Power

  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    A document created by George Washington declaring America as neutral in the conflict between Britain and France. Due to this non involvement America could keep both Britain and France as an ally, which proved useful in America growing as a nation later on.
  • XYZ Affair

    The XYZ affair was an affair that involved outrage over the fact that France sent over people to take money before the American diplomats could meet the French ambassador. This is key in America's development as a nation because it lead to the Quasi-war and eventually America being taken seriously as a nation by France, which allowed for stronger diplomacy.
  • Convention of 1800

    This event was an agreement reached between France and America over the Quasi-war. This is vital to America as a nation because France became a valuable ally for America and still settling this over a convention proved how serious America was taken by France.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    America purchased the Louisiana territory from France for roughly 15 million dollars. This is important to America as a world power because it doubled the size of the country and made America more powerful.
  • Embargo Act of 1807

    Established to attempt to get France and Britain to respect American rights the Embargo Act of 1807 was an act that restricted trade with France and Britain. This gained French and British attention, and further put America in the spotlight as a power.
  • The War of 1812

    A conflict involving America and Britain, this war was started based on the issue of impressment. Due to this conflict and it's resolve the British promised to stop their pushing on Canadian borders and this ultimately lead to America being respected for standing up to one of the greatest world powers.
  • The Treaty of Ghent

    This treaty majorly ended the war of 1812. This treaty gave America and Britain the same land they had before June 1812, and furthermore brought the alliance between Britain and America back to it's old standard.
  • The Monroe Doctrine

    A document created by James Monroe for the principal objective of declaring that no European powers could colonize America any further. Above that, any further attempts of European powers to colonize would be declared an act of aggression. Due to this, America was able to expand and therefore establish respect as a world power.
