    The German Confederation

    Germany was a collection of small states that were linked as the German Confederation. This Confederation was dominated by Austria. The dominance of Austria was challenged by Prussia and the process of German unification began.
  • The Zollverein

    The Zolverin was an agreeement set up by Prussia and the North German states to reduce costoms duties between them. Exculded Austria and South german states.
  • The Revolution of 1848 in Prussia and the Frankfurt Parliment

    Demonstrations in Berlin led King Fredrick William IV grant liberal consitituion. German Parliment at Frankfurt to try and bring up unification in Germany. No agreement could be reached, and proclaimed German Emperor between the King of Purssia and the Austrian Emporer.
  • Bismarck appointed Chancellor

    Otto von Bismarck was appointed Chancellor of Purssia by King William I. He stresed that German unity would not be achieved by debates and resoltions but by blood and iron (war and conquest)

    The Schleswig- Holstein Question and the War against Denmark

    King Christian VII of Denmark finally incorperated the Duchies of Schleswid-Holstein into the Danish kingdom which was breaking the terms of the treaty of London. Prussia took the adminsitration of Schleswig and Austria managed the duchy of Holstein. The two German powers clashed many times. Result was a political division within the German COnfedderation with Austria and Prussia now fighting for domminance in Germany.
  • Austrian- Purrsian War or Seven Weeks' War

    Agreements about the Schleswig-Holstein led to war breaking out between Austria and Purssia. Lasted 7 weeks and resulted in Purssian victory over the Austrians Purssuans assumed the leading state in Germany. Purssia set up the North German Confederation adn annexed those German states that has sided with Austria during the war.

    The Franco-Prussian War

    Frane declared war on Prussia. Prussian victory was both swift and decisive. French Emperor was captured prisoner and removed from power. Wave of nationalism began in Southern Germany.
  • Second German Reich

    King William I of Prussia was proclaimed Emporer of Germany. Brismarck remained Chancellor until registration in 1890. The Second German Reich came into being
