at exactly 4:45 pm the fire alarm was pulled. in less than two minutes, horse drawn fire fighters came, got their equipment and immediately begin to spring to action. eight floor workers began to ring for the elevator and board it, although this is dangerous the elevator managed to make a few trips before eventually being damaged by the fire and unable to move so everyone who couldn't board ran to the stairways causing a pileup. the door couldn't open until a girl pushed through the crowd. -

it was a saturday afternoon. the cutters of the triangle shirtwaist factory would be getting off early at 4:45 pm. finishing work early at 4:40 pm. although forbidden, the workers decided to have a quick smoke. smoking cigarettes and blowing the smoke down their sleeves they finished and afterwards the fire started. some one might have flicked ash or threw a lit cigarette butt in a scrap bin. throwing water at it didn't work and the hose wasn't connected to the standpipe.
