  • The First Basic Telephone

    The First Basic Telephone was invented by Antonio Meucci. He made his first attempt in Italy.
  • The First Telephone Patent

    Even though Antonio Meucci was the first one to invent the telephone he is not often credited to it. Alexander Graham Bell was the first one to be awarded U.S. patent for the telephone.
  • The First Telephone Line

    The First Telephone Line
    The construction of the first telephone line was not the only thing that happened around this time. The fist switchboard was created and the first telephone exchange was working.
  • American Bell Telephone Company

    Bell decided to merge his company with other one to create the American Bell Telephone Company. By this time there was over 49,000 telephones in use.
  • AT&T

    AT&T
    American Telegraph and Telephone Company was formed in 1885 and dominated the telephone industry over the next century. Bell's system employees were able to get the stock prices down on other small phone companies making it easier to take over companies.
  • Update on Bell

    At this time Bell had over 600,000 phones in his system. By 1905 it was up to 2.2 million and by 1910 it was 5.8 million.
  • WWI

    During WWI, from 1918-1919 the government nationalized the telephone and telegraph lines so soldiers can send messages home. It was returned to private ownership a year later.
  • Regulated Monopoly

    In 1934 the government came crawling back for more. This time they decides to let AT&T operate as a regulated monopoly.
  • 1948 Phone Count

    There was over 30 million phones connected. The 30 millionth phone was actually connected in the U.S.
  • 1960's and 1980 Telephone Count

    In the 60's there were more than 160 million lines in the world. By 1980, there were over 175 million telephone subscriber lines in the U.S. alone.

    In Orlando, Florida 1993, the first cellular network went online. It was then that the world changed forever.
