The Stranger Characters: Marie

  • Beach Day

    Beach Day
    The day after Maman's funeral, Meursault and Marie hang out at the beach. As they were swimming, the only thing he could think of was her looks, he never mentioned her personality. She was a little surprised when he told her that his mother died the day before, but she forgets about it as the date goes on.
  • Fight

    Fight
    As Meursault and Marie were on a date, a fight breaks out between Raymond and his mistress. Marie asks Meursault to go find a policeman but he tells her he doesn't like cops. He doesn't seemed phased by the fight, and doesn't care that she is shaken up by it.
  • Marriage?

    Marriage?
    Marie asks Meursault if he will marry her, and he responds saying he doesn't see the point, but if she really wants to, then sure. She then asks if he loves her, and he answers the same way, saying that it didn't mean anything if he loved her or not. He later tells her that he probably would have accepted a proposal from another woman.
  • Beach Day 2

    Beach Day 2
    Marie and Meursault go to Raymond's beach house and on the way there, he thinks that he might actually get married. But at the beach house, Meursault doesn't pay much attention to her and is busy with Raymond and the Arabs. He leaves her with the other women while do other things.
  • Visiting Meursault

    Visiting Meursault
    After Meusrault is in jail, she comes to visit him there, but the whole time he is very distracted and more interested in the other people around them. She took the time to come out and visit him, but he doesn't seem to care. Again he was more interested in her physical appearance. This shows how they did not have a very deep relationship.
  • Trial

    Trial
    Marie comes to sit in during Meursault's trial and again the first thing he mentions is her physical appearance. She was obviously nervous and tried not to say anything bad about him, but the prosecutor twisted things, and she began to sob. When he gets his sentence, he finally remembers to look at her on his way out. Throughout the whole trial he never really thought of her, until he knew his future.
