French and Indian War
This war helped to determine whether Britiain of France would be the greatest power in North America, due to conflicts with land and control. The British ended up winning the war. -
Stamp Act
Tax was put on legal documents. This helped to pay for British troops and the defense of the colonies. It was eventually repealed when sellers protested because they weren't selling as many goods. -
Townsend Acts
Tax on basic needs such as glass, paper, and tea were put on American colonies by the British government. The British wanted the colonists to pay of more themselves. The Townsend acts also helped pay for the salaries of judges and goveners. -
Boston Massacre
British killed 5 citizens after someone had called ¨fire¨ not knowing who called it. The British had been trying to increase control and taxes at the time which put the colonists and the British on the edge with each other. This demonstrated British cruelty, and helped inspire the colonists need for independence. -
Tea Act
The Tea Act allowed the company to ship tea to the colonies instead of stopping at England first. It helped to save the East India Company from bankruptcy by lowering the tax on the tea paid to the British. -
Boston Tea Party
Colonists dressed as Indians and dumped about 340 chest worth of tea into the Boston Harbor as a protest against the tea act, which was meant to hep save the East India Company from bankruptcy. -
First Continental Congress
The first Continental Congress was to help boost free debate and eventually issued a declaration of rights in reaction to the Coercive acts by the British. They helped to point out how British Parliments laws violated the colonists, and helped restore their rights. -
Intolerable Acts
The king sent many troops to the colonists that they were required to feed and take care of or else they would be killed. This was meant to punish the colonists for the tea party protest in reaction to the taxes. -
The Battle of Lexington and Concord
This battle was significant because it kicked off the American Revolutionary War with British troops marching into Concord. They heard of supplies and weapons being held by the patriots. -
Olive Branch Petition
This petition was the colonists trying to stop going to war with Britain. It contained their pledge of loyalty and their rights as a British citizen. It was also to try and simmer down any conflicts between the colonists and British government before a war broke out.
