  • USSR Launches Sputnik

    Sputnik was the 1st artifical satalite sent into space by the USSR. We (the USA) were worried that since the USSR could sent out satalites that they could also send out nucular missiles. History of Space Exploration Magazine

  • USA Launches Explorer 1

    The USA launched the satalite Explorer 1 into orbit. This was the USś was of responding to the USSR, but they were still behind in the Space Race. History of Space Exploration Magazine

  • USA Creates NASA

    In 1958, the US created NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) to help with all the space problems. History of Space Exploration Magazine

  • Mercury 7

    NASA selects a group of 7 astronauts, all of which are in space related missions. More astronauts keep being trained to help aid the US. http://www.thespacerace.com/timeline/

  • USSR Sends First Man In Space

    Yuri Gagarin made history by becoming the first man in space. This aided the USSR in showing the USA what they could do, but also showed the being sent into space was possible. History of Space Exploration Magazine

  • The President´s Challenge

    President John F. Kennedy challenges the USA to put a man on the moon before the decade is over. This motivated them to do so later. History of Space Exploration Magazine

  • The Gemini Program

  • The First Spacewalk

    Alexei Leonov spent 12 minuetes outside of his space shuttle, doing the first spacewalk. This proved that people could walk outside in space. http://www.thespacerace.com/timeline/

  • Touchdown On The Moon

    The Luna 9 (sent by USSR) performs the first soft landing on the Moon, towchdowning on it's suface and showing that spacecraft could land on the moon.

  • Earth To Moon

  • USA Puts First Men On The Moon

    The USA ended the Space Race by putting the first men on the moon. While doing that, the collected rocks and samples from the surface, then took those samples back to Earth. History of Space Exploration Magazine
