    The first official capital of Japan is located in Nara.

    Heian Period

    The emperor moved capital of japan to the city of Heian- Kyo (Modern day Kyoto).
  • 1184

    Kamakura Period

    The minamoto clan seizes power from emperor, Minamoto then becomes Shogun and establishes his own capital. The shoguns then ruled japan for the next 700 years.
