The Civil Rights Act of 1964 Signed
On July 2, 1964 (the day after the story first started), President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil rights act of 1964. This made it possible for African Americans to vote, which made Rosaleen very happy. -
Lily and Rosaleen Run Away
Rosaleen and Lily go out to town so that Rosaleen can vote for the first time. While they are walking they got into some trouble and Rosaleen was aressted. After Lily broke Rosaleen out of the hospital and they ran away from home. -
Finding a Home
Lily and Rosaleen find themselves at the Boatwright sister's home and they end up staying there. -
They move in
Lily and Rosaleen decide to work for the sisters and stay at thier home. Lily gets to know her new surroundings and the eldest sister, Autumn who runs the honey farm. She becomes good friends with Autumn. -
Zach and the phone call
Lily meets Zach who also works at the honey farm and they become fast friends. He tells her that he wants to become a lawyer and a month later he takes her to a lawyers office, and Lily makes a phone call to her father to ask him something, but he is enraged so she hangs up. -
The truth revealed
Lily finds one of the sister, May, making a trial of bread crumbs and marshmallows out the door to lead out cockroaches, which was something her mom used to do, She askes May if she had ever seen her mother before and she tells her that she used to stay with them. -
Tragedy
Zach takes Lily out to town and he sees a couple of his friends, which he starts to talk to. They start to get insulted by a couple of white men and one of his friends throw a bottle at the men, so they all go to jail for not saying who did it. When May finds out she cannot take the pain (she had some kind of mental problems from a tramatic experience before) so she drowned herself in the river. -
The Talk
After a while of all of them mourning, Lily decideds it is time for her to ask what the whole truth of her mother's being there and if August knew anymore. August reveals to her that she was the maid of her mother's family since her mother had been young and when she had been having trouble with Lily's father she had run away to here without Lily, but eventually went back to get her, but when she did she was shot on accident by Lily. Lily was hurt to find out that her mother had left her. -
T-Ray
Lily's father (T-Ray) had her call from way back when tracked and he found out that it had been the lawyers office in the town they were in, The lawyer's secretary tells him where she is staying and he comes for Lily. She tells him she isn't leaving and when he finds out that this is the same place Lily's mother had run away to he snaps. Lily, Rosaleen, August, and some other women convince him to let her stay and he leaves. -
Resolution
Lily joins the school in that town and she goes to school with Zach, who decided to go to the white school, and the lawyer's daughter, who she had become friends with. She and Rosaleen stay at the house with the sisters and work on the farm. She has not just lost a mother and father, but gained 4 more mothers.
