The rebels that called themselves the 'Decembrists,' they were brutally repressed by the new Czar, Nicholas I. The Decembrists represented the elite of the military officers whose desire it was to have greater freedom. -
Nicholas II becomes czar of Russia
Nicholas II had inherited the throne from his father who died of kidney disease on October 20, 1894. HIs father was only 49 when he died, and it was now up the NIcholas II to rule the Rissian throne. -
The Russo-Japanese War
The Russo-Japanese War was caused when Japan launched a surprise naval attack on Port Arthur on a Russian naval base in China. The attack was successful and it had destroyed the russian fleet. Throughout the war Japan won many different victories over Russia. Russia's horrible defeat in this war was another cause that lead to the March Revolution. -
Bloody Sunday
After Russia was on its way to losing a war against Japan, a group of workers were about to maarch to the czar's winter palace. As they were demanding, the imperial forces began to open fire on them, which killed and wounded hundreds. Nicholas soon became known as "Bloody Nicholas." -
World War I (Russian Involvement)
World War 1 had a devastating impact on Russia. Russia was not successful at all in the war, and it left them in bad condition. The Russian industries were not devloped enough to meet the need for war supplies, and the transportation systems could not supply the troops at the front. It was a hard war for Russia and it was what contributed to Nicholas having to abdicate the throne. -
The March Revolution
The March Revolution was a huge contribution to ending the imperial rule. In mid-March the citizens were growing very angry with the food shortages and they ended up causing Czar Nicholas II to abdicate the throne. -
Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian throne
Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the throne during the February Revolution. Many strikes and general revolts had broken out in Petrograd that day. Czar Nicholas was always a weak ruler, which made the citizens even more angry with him. The people no longer believed in Nicholas, he had to abdicate the throne. -

The civil war was a war between the Bolsheviks and the anti-Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks wanted a communist country but the anti-Bolsheviks did not. The anti-Bolsheviks were trying to fight for their freedom from a Communist government. -
The creation of the U.S.S.R.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was established on December 30, 1922. The new communist state was the successor to the russian Empire. It was the first country in the world to be based on Marxist socialism. -
Vladimir Lenin’s Death
On January 21, 1924 Vladimir Lenin died from a brain hemorrhage at the age of 54. His body was placed in a mausoleum near the Moscow Kremlin. In his honor Petrograd was renamed Leningrad.
