    Hitler Renounces the Treaty of Versailles
    The German people always hated the Treaty of Versailles. The disarmament clause stripped Germany of military potential.Therefore in 1935, Hitler renounces the treaty, speciffically the disarmament clause, and soon begins conscription.
  • Nuremburg Laws Passed

    Nuremburg Laws Passed
    The Nuremburg Laws were a part of Hitler's antisemitic policy. They stripped Jews of citizenship. This was done to achieve the racially pure Germany that Hitler wanted.
  • Hitler Remilitarizes the Rhineland

    Hitler Remilitarizes the Rhineland
    Hitler stations troops in the Rhineland. In doing so, Hitler violated Versailles Treaty and the Locarno Agreement and posed a threat to France. The League of Nations does very little.

    Alliance between Italy and Rome. Prior to 1935, Italy had sided politically with GreatBritain and France. Italy became alienated from the League of Nations and decided to side with Germany.

    Despite the efforts of Britain and France, Italy was alienated from the League of Nations and turned to Germany.
  • Anti-Comitern Pact

    Anti-Comitern Pact
    Japan joins Germany and Italy's alliance. Both wanted to expand and both faced conflict with Russia. Also, they both felt left out of the newly divided colonies across the globe.
  • Neutrality Act

    Neutrality Act
    American declaration of neutrality. President Roosevelt signes the Nuetrality Act which banned travel on war ships. Also, it forbade the arming of American merchant ships and issued an embargo with warring nations.

    Hindenburg Disaster
    The German airship Hindenburg bursts into flame in Lakehurst, New Jersey. Thirteen passengers, 22 crew and one member of the ground crew are killed.
  • Anschluss

    Anschluss
    Austria and Germany Unify. This meant that Austria became part of the Third Reich. Germany gave its support to the Austrian Nazi Party in order to seize the the government's power.
  • Munich Agreement

    Munich Agreement
    In an attempt by other political leaders to appease Hitler, they give land surrounding Czechoslovakia. This area became "Sudetenland". The Czechs were not consulted.

    Also called "Night of the Broken Glass". Thousands of Jewish stores and synagogues burned or otherwise destroyed. Thousands of Jews are sent to concentration camps.

    A five year project aimed at expanding the Nazi German navy fleet by 1944. The goal was to challenge the Brittish naval fleet. Included the construction of nearly 400 ships.

    Hitler broke his promise to spare the rest of Czechoslovakia, as set forth in he Munich Agreement. He invades the rest of Czechoslovakia. Thus, the Czechs are taken by the Third Reich as well.

    The invasion of Poland marks the start of WWII. The invasion was fascilitated by the Germans bombing Polish cities from the air.
