    Great Britain Raises Taxes
    Britain issued taxes on sugar and currency around this time and there were many other taxes throughout the year.
  • Committees of Correspondence

    Committees of Correspondence
    They were founded by Samuel Adams and their main slogan was "No Taxation Without Representation". The committees were one of the earliest ways to challenge the British taxes.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    Colonists were irritating British guards and started throwing things like snow at them. The British soldiers fired into the crowd and killed 5 colonists.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    Colonists dressed as Indians sneaked onto tea ships. They dumped all of the tea into the Boston Harbor.
  • The Intolerable Acts

    The Intolerable Acts
    The Intolerable Acts were founded in the spring and they were all established on different dates. Britain used these acts to punish the colonists for the Boston Tea Party. One of the laws was that the Boston Harbor was closed.
  • First Continental Congress meets

    First Continental Congress meets
    This was when many colonial leaders met to discuss Great Britain and America and the disagreement that the two countries had. They met in Carpenter's Hall.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    Lexington: few volleys; "the shot heard 'round the world";no one knows who fired the shot (first battle).
    Concord: weapons were hidden here and the British wanted them; the weapons were moved and the minute-men forced the British to retreat.
    The Patriots won.
  • Bunker Hill

    Bunker Hill
    At Breeds Hill in Boston, the minute-men fought the British. They ran out of ammunition and used whatever they could find. This battle proved to the patriots that they had a chance. There is now a monument there.
    The British won.
  • Canada

    The patriots wanted to take Quebec, Canada. They moved into Canada and lost quickly to the British.
    The British won.
  • New York

    New York
    The British arrived on many ships and greatly outnumbered the patriots. The British forced the patriots off of Long Island which also forced the patriots to retreat. They escaped at night across the Hudson River.
    The British won.
  • Trenton (New Jersey)

    Trenton (New Jersey)
    The Hessians were celebrating and the patriots snuck up on them by crossing the Delaware River. The patriots attacked.
    The Patriots won!
  • Saratoga

    Saratoga
    The British wanted to cut off the New England colonies from the rest for revenge. Two armied were supposed to meet up and take the border, but the patriots stalled them. The Patriots won and France and Spain joined them.
    The Patriots won.
