The Beginning of the Reconstruction Act
Abraham Lincoln began planning the Reconstruction Act in 1863 but only put it into action during 1865. The first thing he did was passing the Freedmen's Bureau. -
Assasination
Abraham Lincoln was Assasinated. Lincoln did not see the Southerners as enemies. However, the vice president Andrew Johnson (became the president after Lincoln died) favored the southerners since he was once a southerner himself. -
13th Amendment and Black Codes
The 13th Amendment was passed. It stated that all blacks were free in the United States. However, the Black Codes was created to limit the black's rights. -
The Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act of 1866 stated that all blacks in the United States had an equal amount of rights as whites. -
Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan was created to intimidate blacks into restoring white power. -
The Reconstruction Acts
The Reconstruction Acts stated that blacks were able to vote. -
President Johnson was Impeached
President Johnson was impeached for violation against the acts of Congress. -
Ulysses Grant
Ulysses Grant was elected president and Andrew Jackson was no longer involved with the Reconstruction Era. -
Fifteenth Amendment
States that males could vote regardless of race. -
Forty-second Congress
For the first time five blacks were elected in the House of Representatives. -
Freedman's Bureau Abolished

The Civil Rights Act of 1875
It gave equal rights to blacks in public accomodations and jury service. -
Rutherford Hayes
Rutherford Hayes was elected president. -
Compromise of 1877
It removed troops from many of the United States' states that were protecting the Civil Rights Act.
