Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau goal was to provide relief to southerners both black and white. It was one of the first relief organization that provided food, clothes, fuel, medical services, jobs and family location. The Freedmen's Bureau helped with black schools in the south. -
Civil War Ends
General Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox courthouse. The war ended in the spring. -
Lincoln Assassinated
Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's theater. John Booth, a well-known actor was the culprit. -
13th Amendment Ratified
Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865. It formally abolished slavery in the United States. -
1st Reconstruction Act
Southern states were readmitted into the Union. President Lincoln instructed this act. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
Promoted social equality between black and white Americans. Lead to equality rights even though they may have no been served. -
Reconstruction Ends
Reconstruction ends when the Compromise of 1876 to pull federal troops from the south. Hayes agreed to end Reconstruction before he got elected.
