Eugenia often ran away from home as a child. She would look for work in brickyards and other places where she would dress as a boy. -
Eugenia becomes Harry.
Eugenia put her daughter, Josephine, into the care of a woman in Sydney, Australia. She began to present herself to the world as a man called Harry Leo Crawford. -
Eugenia sets sail.

Harry becomes a working man.
Eugenia, as Harry, held manual jobs in Australia, such as at a meat factory, in hotels and laundries, at a rubber company, and in private service. By 1912 he was a yardman and driver, where he met Annie Birkett, a widow with a 9-year-old son. Photo provided by Australia Dictionary of Biography. -
Harry gets married.
Harry and Annie set up a confectinary shop in Balmain. He told her he was a 38-year-old widower. They were married February 19, 1913. It is unclear whether Annie knew her husband was not a man. According to neighbors, they fought often, especially when Eugenia's daughter returned. -
Annie's body is discovered.
Harry and Annie went on a vacation in 1917 from which Annie did not return. On October 2, a woman's body, that had been burned and beaten, was discovered. According to Harry, his wife had left him. Harry takes his second wife.
On September 29, 1919, Harry is married to Elizabeth King Allison. -
Harry is arrested on suspicion of murder.
By 1920, the burned and battered woman's body had been identified as Harry's first wife, Annie. He was arrested on suspicion of murder on July 5. He asked to be held in the women's cells. Photo provided by Australia Dictionary of Biography. -
Harry becomes Eugenia at trial.
The revelation that Harry was a woman created a media sensation. At his preliminary hearing he appeared as a man. However, at the trial in October, he dressed as a woman. He was convicted and condemned to death, but the sentence was commuted. -
Eugenia is released from prison.

Eugenia dies.
