The queen remembered Ralph from Ireland and he was given a command of the colony that was being organized by Sir Walter Raleigh. Ralph needed to sail to Virginia (Roanoke). -
Seven Ships Left England
With the command of Sir Richard Grenville seven ships with about 600 men left England. After a storm the amount of ships were reduced to five. They thn regrouped and arrived at the outer banks in June. -
Sir Drake Carried The First Colonist Back Home
Only 107 men of Ralph Lane's colony lasted 8 months in Roanoke. The colony suffered due to lack of preparation, supplies and Ralph's lack of skill when dealing with the Indians. Eventually Ralph left the colony. The colony lived in devastation for months. Until Sir Drake came and agreed to take them back to England. On June 18th or 19th of 1586, Sir Drake left with the first colonist to take them back to their home. -
