Who invented the radio
The radio was invented by Guglielmo Marconi in Italy in 1895 -
When did the radio actually start broadcasting
The radio first started broadcasting on november 2, 1920 although a lot of these broadcasts were only worried newspapers that feared they would be replaced by the radio. The first station was called 8XK but was eventually renamed to KDKA. -
How this affected america
The radio allowed for the enjoyment of listening to music, cartoons and even the news cast to know if it was going to be a good day or not but soon some radio stations started competing and others caused even more racial stereotypes than there already was. An example of this is the radio station called "Amos 'n Andy," which was a show in Chicago and was one radio station that caused a lot more racial stereotyping. -
Advertising on the radio
Advertising started in 1922 where WEAF put up a 10 minute advertisement for an apartment complex that charged 50 dollars. -
personal radio stations
the first personal radio station was uncle charlie and started in 1926 -
The FRC (Federal Communications Commision)
The FRC started when uncle charlie became too popular so they created the FRC to force radio speakers to get a license for transmitting and also gave them certain radio frequencies, call letters and a power limit. -
The golden era
The golden era was in the middle of the great depression and people were wanting money so thats when the radio stations played popular music, story hour, situational comedies, and drama an example of some of these shows are GunSmoke, The shadow, superman, dick Tracey, and the 64 dollar question (which was the original who wants to be a millionaire). -
The television
When television became popular in the late 1930 radio stations began to lose money and since they were losing money the advertisers moved over to the television the radio stations thought it was over and they thought the radio was going to be gone forever but why is it still here then?. -
What saved radio
One thing that the radio had that the television did not was MUSIC, music is what saved the radio because at the time of the 1930s you didn't have a lot of options of what you could listen to music on you had jukeboxes, records, or live concerts but no one had a jukebox in there home, record disc's were too easily broken and no one had the time or money to go to every single live concert so the radio filled in a missing gap. -
Major Edwin Armstrong
Edwin Armstrong invented the FM transmitter which gave the radio a stronger signal and clearer sound but sadly the only way to get the FM signal and sound listeners had to buy all now radio sets. -
How FM affected the radio
The FM not only increase the signal strength and sharpen the sound but it also allowed two more things it allowed there to be two different signals AM and FM, AM was primarily used for talking like the weather or just talk shows and FM was primarily used for music. -
Radio today
In this time you don't see radios everywhere but in cars and maybe some houses why? well its due to us having advanced technology that what we had back then we have smart phones, laptops, even gaming systems but they all can download music you can buy and download music on your phone or download an app to get radio on your phone you also have things like youtube, spotify, pandora, and itunes not a lot of people listen to the radio anymore but the radio is still going and it will keep going.
