  • The Puritan Culture

    They were a very sever religious group that was intent on keeping religion pure. They were intolerant of other beliefs. They came to Massachusetts because they were a major opposition to the Church of England. Their goal was to make a church that was pure. They believed the were God's Chosen People.
  • Maryland Catholic Experiment

    Lord Baltimore saw Maryland as an economic opportunity as well as a way to grant religious freedom to Catholics. Most came as individuals instead of family units. There were country gentlemen who were mostly Catholic, and Protestant artisans. This mixture would doom the Catholics because they would soon find themselves once again in the persecuted minority.
  • Anne Hutchinson/ Dissent in Massachusetts Bay

    In 1637, Anne Hutchinson was banished from the mostly puritan Massachusetts Bay colony for preaching against puritan beliefs and predestination.She was a free thinker and was banished because she was a threat against the Puritan beliefs.
  • Virginia Statues for Religious Freedom

    This document was against the policy of state church since it was unfair to charge taxes to support a church that someone doesn't believe in. It was a step towards religious freedom. In time the policy was accepted by the colonies.
