Pearl Harbor

On Dec. 7, 1941 Japan attacked one of the U.S. Navy's largest bases (Pearl Harbor). Killing hundreds of U.S. troops.

War against Japan

Dec 8, 1941

The United States declared war against Japan, starting the Pacific War.

Iwo Jima

Feb 19, 1945

The Marine Corps sent marines to a small island called Iwo Jima. Japan needed Iwo Jima to prolong the war. After 36 days of fighting the marines took over the island. During the battle the marines took a flag to the top of the island's largest mountian, Mt. Suribachi where they raised a U.S. flag.

Atomic Bomb

Aug 2, 1945

The first atomic bomb drops on Hiroshima.

Second Bomb

Aug 8, 1945

Nagasagi gets hit by the second bomb.

The Pacific War ends.

Aug 14, 1945

Japan surrenders to the United States on the U.S. battleship the Missouri.
