The Battle at Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. It crippled the South so bad that Confederate General Lee would never be able to invade the North.

Grant won the battle. After the Siege of Vicksburg, the Union got full control of the Mississippi River which discontinued Confederate trade, transportation, and military/ fortifications. The Battle lasted from May 18th to July 4th, 1863.

Abraham was reelected in the 1864 election (McClellan was his opponent). The election is significant, relating to the Civil War, because it was the first election in a while that had occurred during a war and 5 months after the election, the Confederacy collapsed with Lincoln's second term.

Ulysses Grant Appointed William Sherman as a commander for the Mississippi military division. Shermans' appointment changed the course of the Civil War: Union soldiers noticed the importance of destroying not only Confederate armies but the southern civilian population. The Union also wanted to destroy the south's will to fight after Sherman's appointment.

Lee and Grant met at the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia on April 9th, 1865. This surrender marked the end of the Civil War.
