Compromise of 1850
Senator Henry Clay proposes the compromise of 1850, which includes two laws.One, to please the North California is admitted as a free state and slave trade is abolished in Capitol. The other law to please the south, slavery wont be abolished in areas taken from mexico and laws for catching run away slaves are strengthened. this causes balance in slave and free states. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This law, part of the Compromise of 1850, was a set of stronger laws to help recapture slaves. People committing crimes under this law can be held without an arrest warrant. Also, they had no trial. Instead, a Federal commission ruled each case. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
In 1854, a bill passed saying the decsion over if the Nebraska & Kansas territories would become slave or free states would be done by popular soveriegionity. Proslavery & antislavery settlers rushed into the territories to vote. Soon a civil war started that earned the area the nickname "Bleed'n Kansas". -

Proslavery and antislavery Settlers went to kansas. Kansas proslavery people wanted the state to be slavery state so they got missouri men an voted for a illegal election. Causing chaos. -

Dred Scott Case
Dred Scott was a slave in Missouri who wanted to gian freedom. He sued the government for Freedom. He said that he lived in a state where slavery is illegal. the Government rejected him because he was not a U.S. citizen. -

Abraham lincoln wins the election of 1860. southerners fear that slavery will be abolished.Lincln says he will stop slavery from expanding but not abolish it.
