    The Wilmot Proviso
    This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in terretories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House Of Representatives but was defeatedn the Senate, thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success, it led to the formation of the Free-Soil Party.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    Passed in 1850, this was a compromise that attempted to please bot the North and the South on the subject of slavery. It did this in two ways: to please the North, California will enter as a free state, and slave trade would be abolished in Washington D.C.
    And to please the South, Congress would no longer pass any new laws regarding slavery in territories won from Mexico, and stronger laws for catching runaway slaves.

    Bleeding Kansas

    The fighting that occured in Kansas was the result of popular-sovereignty being used to determine slavery expansion. Many prslavery people entered the Kansas and Nebraska territory to vote illegaly for slavery. This angered anti slavery people, and a 7 year civil war commenced.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    Act that repealed the Missouri Compromise of 1820, It also created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. The act allowed for those who lived in the new territories to vote to either become a slave state, or a free state. Later on during voting, the Northerners become Angered while the Southerners applaude the creation of the act.
  • Caning of Sumner

    Caning of Sumner
    Senetor Charles Sumner was delivering a speech. He made fun of pro-slavery people and insulted A.P> Butler, a South Carolina state senator. Preston Brooks, a relative of Butler, attended the speech and grew angry about Sumners remarks against Butler. Brooks beat Sumner with his cane 30 times, and Sumner, whos foot was stuck to the desk, couldn't defend himself. Sumner temporarily left office shortly after due to embarresment.
  • Dred Scott Vs. Sanford

    Dred Scott Vs. Sanford
    Former slave Dred Scott sues for freedom after being takem to live in free states, then taken back to slave states. His case goes to supreme court but is ended by Roger B. Taney stating Scott was not a U.S. citizen, therfore, he could not sue. Taney also argued that congress can't ban slavery from expanding because slaves were viewed as "property." Therefore, Missouri Compromise was considered unconstitutional.
  • Attack on Harper's Ferry

    Attack on Harper's Ferry
    Abolitionist John Brown captures a U.S. arsenal in Harper's Ferry. He encourages slaves to join him and fight for freedom. No slaves join John Brown and his followers are quickly captured, tryed for treason, and hanged. Northerners praised Brown's "heroic" deeds, while the Southerners are angered at the Northerner's reaction.
  • Election of 1860

    Election of 1860
    Lincolon and Douglas fight for presidency. Lincoln wins election, but southern states are convinced that he will abolish slavery.Lincoln promises otherwise but Southern states do not trust him and secede despite Lincoln's warnings.
