This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representitive but was defeated in the senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 became a law by the end of September. This compromise was made to settle disagreement between free states and slave states. Stephen A. Douglas made this compromise a law. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
the Kansas-Nebraska Act gave their residents the right to allow slavery. This act angered opponents of slavery. A few residents realized Kansas will soon turning into a battle- ground because of this act. -
Bleeding Kansas
In May, a group of proslavery attacked. This attack happened in Lawrence, Kansas. Offices and houses of the governor of the antislavery government was destroyed. -
Canning of Sumner
While Sumner was delivering his speech, he was making fun of A. P. Butler. Preston Brooks, which is a relative of Brooks, heard about the speech. So, he attacked Sumner with a cane. He hit him on the head 30 ior more times. -
Dred Scott V. Sandford
Dred Scott, a slave, sued for his freedom because he was taken to live in a no slave territory. Scott went to the Supreme Court in 1856. then in 1857, the court ruled against Dred Scott. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted to free slaves, to do this he had to capture the weapons in the U.S. Arsonal . Brown and 18 followers captured the harpers Ferry Arsenal. Brown and 6 others were captured. -
Electon of 1860
The election of 1860 turned into two races, inth nourth and south.Lincoln and Dougas were canidates for the north and Breckinridge and bell were canidates for the south. Lincoln won the election.
