Wilmot Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the formation of the Free Soil Party. -

Kansas -Nebraska Act
Established the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and gave their residents the right to decide whether to allow slavery. -
"Bleeding Kansas"
Attacks such as the Sack of Lawrence and Pottawomie Massacre occured and civil war soon broke out. The territory came to be called "Bleeding Kansas". -
Caning of Sumner
Sumner gave a speech full of insults. Preston Brooks heard about the speech and attacked Sumner by hitting his head with his cane. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
Supreme Court case where a slave named Dred Scott was sued for his freedom, because he had been taken to live in territories where slavery was illegal. The court ruled against Scott. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. Him and eighteen followers captured the Harpers Ferry arsenal, killing four people in the raid. Brown and six men were captured. He was sentenced to hang. -
Election of 1860
Turned to two different races for presidency from the North and South. Lincoln won the election.
