The Murder of Emmett Till

  • Emmet Goes to Buy Bubble Gum and is Accused

    Emmett Till goes with a group of teenagers to Bryant's Grocery and Meat Market, owned by Roy and Carolyn Bryant, who were a white couple. Emmet goes in to buy bubble gum and kids standing outside will say they heard Emmet whistle at Carolyn Bryant
  • Emmet is Kidnapped and Killed

    At around 2:30 am, Carolyn's husband Roy Bryant and his half brother J. W. Wilam, kidnap Emmet Till. They describe he was brutally beaten, shot in the head, put barbed wire around his neck, and pushed his body in the Tallahatchie River.
  • J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant are Arrested

    On August 29, 1955, J. W. Milam and Roy Bryant are arrested for kidnapping in LeFlore Country, due to the connection with Emmet Till's disappearance. They were sent to jail in Greenwood, Mississippi.
  • Emmet Till's Body was Found

    Emmet Till's body was pulled from the river, but it was decomposed. Moses Wright identifies the body from the ring Till had with the initials L.T.
  • Milam and Bryant are Fully Prosecutes

    The Mississippi Governor Huge White order local officials to fully prosecute both Milam and Bryant regarding the Emmet Till case.
  • Mamie Till Receives Emmet's Casket

    In Chicago, Mamie Till goes to the Illinois Central Terminal to get Emmett's casket. She gets support from family, but photographers surround her and take pictures of her falling in grief at the sight of Till's casket. The body is then taken to the A. A, Rayner and Sons Funeral Home.
  • The Jackson Mississippi Daily News

    The Jackson Mississippi Daily News decries the brutal senseless crime. But continues to claim that the NAACP is arousing hatred and fear because they were calling Till's murder a lynching.
  • Emmett Till's Body is Taken to Chicago for a Funeral

    Till's body is taken to Chicago's Roberts Temple Church of God for both the viewing and the funeral. His mother decides to have an open-casket funeral, so the world can see his brutally beaten body. Because of this, thousands of Chicagoans line up to see his body.
  • Emmett Till is Buried

    Till is buried at Burr Oak Cemetery. And in Mississippi, a jury indicts Milam and Bryant for the kidnapping and murder of Till. They are both held in jail until the trial.
  • Moses Wright Accuses Two White Men in Court

    Emmett Till's great uncle, Moses Wright, accuses Milam and Bryant in open court. This was an unthinkable thing to do. He points to both men and accuses them of going to his house and kidnapping Till.
  • Not Guilty Verdict

    Milam and Bryant are acquitted of murdering Emmett Till. Both men stand in front of photographers and kiss their wives to celebrate the not guilty verdict.
    Moses Wright and another black man who testified leave Mississippi and are smuggled to Chicago.
