Womens Political Counsel
The WPC met with the mayor of Montgomey (WA Gayle). The purpose of the meeting was to pass along their recommendations to change the bus system. -
Meeting with Montgomey City Officials
Leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. met with Montgomery offcials to discuss the topic of bus seating. -
Claudette Colvin
Claudette Colvin was a 15 year old girl in Montgomery. She was arrested because she refused to give her seat to a white person. -
Mary Louise Smith
Mary Louise Smith was arrested for not giving up her seat for a white person. -
Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was the final person to be arrested for not giving their seat up before the a boycott began. -
Initial Boycott
The WPC called for a boycott of the Montgomery bus system. This boycott was initially supposed to only be 1 day. -
Montgomery Improvement Association
The initial boycott was extended due to monumental turnout. The Montgomery Improvement Association was formed and MLK was named the leader. -
Carpool
The MIA developed a carpool system to make it easier for people to continue to boycott the bus. -
Indictments
About 80 (initially over 100) of the boycott leaders were indicted under anti-conspiracy charges. -
Martin Luther King, Jr.
MLK was one of the many people that were indicted due to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He was indicted as the leaders. -
District Court
It was not until around this point when the federal government took action. A Federal District Court ruled that bus segregation was unconstitutional. -
The Supreme Court
The Supreme Court upheld the ruling by the district court which led laws that required bus segregation being eliminated. -
Desegregation
The City of Montgomery officially desegregated the buses which end the MIA's boycott.
