Edmonia Lewis (American Sculptor) (Born July 4, 1844, Died September 17, 1907)
Mary Edmonia Lewis was a trailblazer who shattered racial barriers as the first professional African American sculptor in the mid-1800s, becoming famous for her 1,408kg marble sculpture, The Death of Cleopatra. The sculptor that I chose from Edmonia Lewis is a sculptor of Anna Quincy Waterston.Edmonia Lewis created this sculptor of Waterston because Waterston and her husband helped Lewis raise money to create her artwork. -
Helena Unierzyska (Polish Painter) (Born April 6, 1867, Died October 11, 1932)
Helena Unierzyska née Matejko was a Polish painter and sculptor, daughter of Poland's national painter Jan Matejko and his wife Teodora Giebułtowska who often posed for his paintings. Even though Helena posed more paintings by her father than she painted, I chose the portrait of her because it is important to showcase the importance of women modeling for paintings during the Middle Ages.
