    The Tokugawa era came to an end when they thought that the government needed a new change. Entering Meiji, he became the new Emperor and restored the power of Emperors as in the Tokugawa they weren't in control.

    The Emperor enforced a change in the way people lived. They enforced that children must attend elementary and all young men must serve in the military. That enforced a sense of loyalty to the Japanese government. All classrooms in Japan had a picture with the emperor.

    Japan's government had started to see if they wanted to stay an independent country they had to conform to the west. So that is what they did. They started to adapt parts from the west to be able to keep up with the improvements in the world.

    When the Important figures returned to Japan to report what they saw, they talked about their clothing. In 1871 the portraits and pictures of the Emporers wore their traditional kimonos, a couple of years later the portraits and pictures had them wearing western coats and "tails" (coat tails).

    Japan started to band together but they realized that they weren't going to be able to continue as a stable stand-alone country if they didn't see what the West was doing. So they started to send a group of important figures out into the world to help them industrialize their country. They would study the machinery, clothes, and schooling.

    Japan tried to continue to let their industrialization continue, so they would build a bunch of mines shipping lines, telephone systems, and other types of industries. That caused huge damage to the economy forcing Japan to sell their mines and industries to privet investors. They were able to have a much bigger industry and make an immense amount of money off of it.

    The Satsuma Rebellion was a cause of them improving their military. Japan's military was very weak before but seeing how the Westerns were starting to create a stronger army, Japan started to follow. They started by drafting more men for their army, giving them guns and other newer fighting technology. A group of former samurai were disappointed and fought back against the new and improved Army. Many deaths occurred but Japan's army inevitably won.

    Japan was able to help expand their work and people, they were able to install telegram lines into their country and even made up their currency systems for the whole country (the Yen). They helped promote saving and investing! They created important slogans for the people to say "fukoku kyōhei" meaning "enrich the country, strengthen the army". The government continued to invest into their army too!

    In Japan, the government didn't have a stable income coming from their people. So they looked to what the West was doing. They took what the West was doing and started to tax their people. The economy was mostly agricultural meaning the people started to be taxed on land and harvest. They cut back the money supply to stop inflation for their economy.

    Since the taxing on the land shut down multiple farms for people, they started to work on other farms. Being farmers for the owners of the land. Keeping up with what the farming would do to be able to have an income come in for the family.

    The effects on Korea were very different. Japan forced Korean schools to not speak any Korean and only teach japanese. They were forced to worship the emperor. They burned Korean history because it wasn't "Japanese". They chopped down trees and forced Korean works to move to Japan to work for them, to then have Japanese move to Korea. Korean woman were mistreated as well.

    Japan wanted more and more land for themselves. So Japan started to attack Korea. Korea tried to fight back but wasn't successful in showing them what they were able to do. China came into the war and tried to stop Japan. Other countries thought China would win since it was more populated, had a bigger mass of land, and was mostly the power in east Asia. To everyone's surprise, Japan won since they had a better-trained army at their hand.

    When people's farms started to shut down the working force got weaker. Jobs were less common and hard to come across. That is when the government leaders started to promote industrialization. They imported cotton mills, spinners, and multiple different types of machinery.

    When Japan was industrializing, they didn't have a bunch of money to spend on machinery and couldn't keep up with it. So they started to have women make silk which was mass-produced and gave terrible working conditions to the poor women. They then were able to buy a bunch of machinery.

    Japan wanted to take control of Korea. They always wanted control over them, but they got too greedy and tried to take control over all of China too! Russia France and Germany intervened and tried to stop them. Japan was preparing for war against the Russians but was worried that France or Germany would help fight them too. They started to relax when Japan and Britain went into alliance. In 1904 they had a surprise attack on Russia, which ended in a peace agreement in 1905 by a US president.

    Japan's factories still had terrible working conditions and even people started to complain. So they started to try and get ahead of the game. They made strikes and unions illegal to try and stop the spread of labor problems. That didn't do anything to help them. People still would riot and fight to get better pay, have better working conditions, and lower taxation rates.

    Surprising other countries was a normal thing for Japan to do. The US started to create colonies and even Japan joined in and didn't fight to free the Asian states. Instead in 1910, they made Korea into a colony. Korea tried to fight to regain independence, but no one would help them because no one wanted to go against Japan's army. The US secretly agreed to Japan's actions and control for them to respect them and have control of the Philippines.

    There was a group of people that were anarchists, they were going against the government. Trying to plot against and convicted of trying to assassinate the emperor. They were later executed because of their convictions.

    Later after the death of the emperor, a new emperor went into power. Known as the son of the Mejij he became the emperor of the Tashio empire. He came into power right after his father passed away. He was a sickly child so the people didn't know how long he had to live as an emperor. His picture was made like his father's, with the newer non-traditional coat and tail. He did not have a photo in traditional clothing taken.

    The death of the emperor was inevitable. He died at the age of 60, ruling Japan for around 45 years. The people mourned his death. Everyone knew who he was and all had a sense of identity as a Japanese from the emperor.

    The Koreans were mistreated when World War 2 started to approach. Many fought back against Japanese rules, and a bunch of groups that tried to fight back against the Japanese were very suppressed. They fought back until Japan set them free. They celebrate with a huge parade. Many Koreans join in on the parades.
