Mausoleum Collapse
An earthquake destroyed the structure sometime around 1500 A.D. after 18 years of it standing. Fragments of the mausoleum were taken away to built other nearby buildings. Eventually, people forgot exactly where the monument stood and built houses over it. -
Rediscovery
The monument was rediscovered by Charles Thomas Newton sometime in the 19th century. He managed to find some walls, a staircase, and three corners of the foundation. He also found sections of material that decorated the wall, portions of a stepped roof, a broken chariot wheel from the structure of the roof, and two statues believed to be in that chariot.
