  • Early years

    Educated at Eton College, Frederick Arthur Stanley joined the Grenadier Guards in 1858 and retired in 1865 as a captain. In that same year he was also elected to the House of Commons that year for Preston.
  • Role in Politics

    After his famous father resigned as Prime Minister, Stanley got his first official appointment, as civil lord of admiralty. In November of this same year he would successfully contested the long time Liberal seat of North Lancashire.
  • Rising Up Through the Ranks

    Frederick Arthur Stanley, unlike his father had considerable administrative abilities and a good head for business. Which would appoint him to financial secretary of the War Office. Where he later became secretary of the state of war(Lord Stanley of Preston).
  • Lord Stanley becomes Prime Minister in Canada

    Queen Victoria selects Frederick Arthur to be the first Prime Minister of Canada. The 47 year old assumes office after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean with his wife.
  • First Contact with Hockey

    Lord Stanley and his wife Lady Lady Stanley along with their son and daughter, attend the Montreal Winter Carnival and took their first contact of Ice Hockey(Hockey Hall of Fame).

    With the death of Lord Stanley's brother, he had to return to England in order to assume the position of the 16th Earl of Derby. However, after falling in love with hockey, he thought he should give back to the great sport. After being encouraged by his sons, the Stanley Cup as most know it today was born(Great History of the Stanley Cup).

    Lord Stanley thought the sport of hockey should no longer be bound to just the country of Canada, so he brought it back to his home country of England. Where it was a huge success which eventually made it's way to the Americas, "we at all times are happy to meet our friends from the United States in the pursuit of song and art. We bid you a very hardy welcome"(1888 Recording of Lord Stanley). Lord Stanley wanted to share his beloved sport, in hopes that other would enjoy it like him.
  • All Good Things Come to an End

    Lord Frederick Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, suffered a heart attack after going for a walk at his home and passed shortly after. Lord Stanley never got a chance to see his trophy awarded to the team with the best record("Lord Stanley of Preston"). Shortly after this tragic event, the trophy took on a life of its own through the decades. It is now considered to be one of the oldest and most famous trophies in all of sports. His legacy lives on through the sport we have all come to enjoy
