Gertrude Belle Elion was born on January 23, 1918 in Manhattan, New York.

Although still in New York City, Elion moved to the more surburan area in 1924 at the age of 5-6 years old. During this year, her brother, Herbert Elion, was born.

Elion was 15 years old when her Grandfather died of cancer. It was unfortunate for him to die, but his death lead to her desire to become involved in science.

Elion began working under George Hatchings at Burroughs Wellcome.

In 1970, Elion moved to "The Research Triangle" located in North Carolina. This is the only place she moved to outside of New York. She was 51-52 years old when she moved here.

Elion retired from Burroughs Wellcome when she was 65 years old.

Elion died on February 21, 1999 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Elion was 81 years old when she did and the cause of her death remains unknown.
