The duke peter was the heir of the Russian throne. At 15 Catherine was put into a planned marriage which wasnt a very healthy relationahip. Peter was mentally unstable and Catherine viewed this as a chance to take power. -
Death of Empress Elizabeth
This proclaimed Peter as Emperor and Catherine as Empress. Catherine was advised to flee because there was rumors of Peter divorcing her, she ignored them and decided to stay. -
