Samuel Gompers is the one who founded the American Federation of Labor (AFL). This is important because this was a turning point because of how he focused on safer work environements along with higher wage and shorter hours. -

This was when Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday. This is important because it celebrates the importance of the Labor Movement. -
The Pullman Strike
This was a nationwide railroad strike that shut down much of the nations freight and passenger traffic West of Detroit, Michigan. This is important because it had a big influence on public opinion on rights of workers, and also the rights of management. -
ILGWU Strike
This was where factory workers mainly women and immigrants couldn't take it anymore, so they went on strike. "We'd rather starve quick than starve slow." This is important because they won pay gains along with a shorter work day. -
"Yellow-Dog" Outlawed
"Yelow- Dog" contracts were agreements between an employer and employee stating that the employee could not join a union. The outlawing of them gave more protection to the unions. -
Fair Labor Standards Act
This was the Act that established the 40 hour work week, minimum wage, and time-in-a-half overtime for certain jobs. This was important because this meant that said worker would get benefits, and not overworked. This was also important because it banned child labor. -
The First Farmworkers Union
It was a plan designed to protect and enhance the economic well being and quality of farmers and ranchers. This was an important event because it led to the first labor agreement with the growers.
