Amir's birth
Sofia Akrami is the birth mother of Amir, although she was a professor at a university she was also at the moment pregnant with a baby boy. Sofia was known to be the princess of Baba (her husband) until she was experiencing complications while in labor and was deceased while giving birth. Sofia's only son amir was born, who while growning up had formed a love for literature just like his mother. -
Hasaan's birth
Ali and his wife Sanubar were having a baby boy, Ali is a Hazara servent that has known Baba for several years and Sanubar is an entertainer. The couple had lived in a mud shack behind Baba's luxurious home. Sanubar was in labor with her son, yet instantly rejected him. "Sanubar had taken one glance at the baby in Ali's arms, seen the cleft lip, and barked a bitter laughter [...]. She had refused to even hold Hassan, and just five days later she was gone". -
Amir wins the kite contest
While Amir and Hassan grew up, Hassan was known to be the weaker link, meaning his treatment was never fair. Amir had an advantage against Hassan considering the fact that he can read and write. Yet Hassan excelled in becoming a kite runner (a child runs after a kite after it has been cut off)and Amir tried his best on winning the kite contest. Amir desperately tried to win his fathers heart, in order to do so he need to win the kite constest (a contest where to win you need to cut off the kite) -
Hassan gets raped
Hassan has always been a loyal friend to Amir, never once did he betray him. Although Amir is the opposite and is a coward towards Hassan, normally teasing Hassan .After Amir had won the kite contest, being the loyal friend Hassan is he went out to run for the last kite, when in end Hassan end up with the short end of the stick. Assef and his friends decided to get pay back for Hassan standing up to them earlier, they raped Hassan. Amir had watched what happened to Hassan and left himdefenseless -
the summer of 1976
'' I turned 13 that summer of 1976, Afghanistan's next to last summer of peace and anonymity," Amir could barely stand himself for watching what happened to Hassan, so most of the days spent was avoiding him. Hassan is normally being avoided by Amir. To figure out a way to make Ali and Hassan to leave so amir doesnt have to deal with his guilt, Amir frames Hassan for stealing, which doesnt work out because Baba still allows them to stay. Ali refuses to stay and takes Hassan and leaves the house. -
Baba and Amir fled
This was the year that Baba and Amir escape Kabul, Afghanistan. They left to Jalalabad, which is about 170km southeast of Kabul. From there they would be taken to Peshawar, Pakistan. This when the Russian had moved in Afghanistan and began trying to take over which start causing wars. Due to the Russian presence, Baba and Amir fled their home, Amir is now 18, which causes him to be conserned of his father when Baba helps a lady out. Later on Amir and Baba are taken to certain checkpoints. -
Living in America
Baba and Amir are now living in Fremont, California.
“In 1980, when we were still in Kabul, the U.S. announced it would be boycotting the Olympic Games in Moscow.” . “For two years, I tried to get Baba to enroll in ESL classes to improve his broken English. But he scoffed at the idea.” . Baba is struggling living in America, while Amir is striving to get an education. -
The summer
“That summer of 1983, I graduated from high school at the age of twenty, by far the oldest senior tossing his mortarboard on the football field that day.” “The following summer, the summer of 1984 – the summer I turned twenty-one – Baba sold his Buick and bought a dilapidated ’71 Volkswagen bus for $550 from an old Afghan acquaintance who’d been a high-school science teacher in Kabul.” This was the year Baba and Amir began going to the flea market. -
Talking to Soraya
Amir speaks to Soraya for the first time without her father present at the flea market. Soraya and Amir small talk is about Amir and his writings. Finally her father sees what is going on with the frequent conversations and sternly but politely explains to Amir that he is not handling the situation as he should. Baba gets cancer
Baba is told he has cancer. After Baba goes to the doctor, he finds out that he has cancer. "Oat Cell Carcinoma." There is no cure for his cancer but the doctor suggests that Baba could always do chemotherapy. Baba refuses because it will not cure him. It will only hold off the enevitable. "It means it wouldn't change the outcome, just prolong it." Baba does not want the treatments and Amir challenges his father about trying the chemotherapy. Instead, Baba gets angry at Amir. -
A wedding and a Death
Shortly after the first of the next year, 1986, Amir asks Baba to ask Soraya's father if he could marry his daughter.After Amir and Soraya's wedding, Baba soon passes away. Amir and Soraya moved into an apartment close to her parents house in Fremont. "Shortly after Baba's death, Soraya and I moved into a one-bedroom apartment in Fremont, just a few blocks away from the gerneral and Khala Jamila's house." There they begin their lives together as husband and wife. -
Trying to get a baby
Soraya and Amir have been trying to concieve a baby. They began trying to concieve since 1989 but by 1991 they were unsucessful. Soraya is very disappointed that they have not concieved and brings the news to her parents. "God knows best, bachem. Maybe it wasn't meant to be." These are the words Soraya's mother can find to help in comforting her daughter. They have a final option to concider which is adoption. -
Getting a call
Amir gets a phone call from Rahim Khan who says that he wants Amir to go to Pakistan to see him. "Rahim Khan is very sick." Amir explains to Soraya that he needs to go but does not know how long he will be gone. Within a week of his phone call, Amir is on his way to Pakistan. All of Amir's past has kept him awake the night before the flight as he awaits the unknown. "I rested my head against the window. Waited, in vain, for sleep." Amir is off to be reunited with his past. -
things have changed.
The geographical setting changed when Rahim Kahn tells Amir about the life in Kabul after Amir and Baba left. He went in search of Hassan and asked him and his wife to come and help him take care of the house. "In the morning, Hassan told me he and Farzana had decided to move to Kabul with me" This is significant because this is where they all left eachother. Ali and Hassan left the house before Amir and Baba left for America. Now they are back in the same place butthings are different. -
Sorab has a new home
Amir went through numerous physical and mental pains when entering Kabul his long lost home once again. Amir dealt with the beatings that his old friend Assef had given him, yet feeling released of his gult. Since Assef had taken Sorab (Hassan's son) from the orphanage and had done twisted things to him, Sorab was not willing to be put back into another orphanage. Amir's only choice left was to bring him home to America, which Soraya was delighted to the new addition.
