Zahir shah's reign ends
"Kabul awoke the next morning to find that the monarchy was a thing of the past". The king, Zahir Shah, was in Italy. Since he wasnt there, his cousin Daoud Khan had ended his forty-year reign. Baba and Rahim Khan were listening to the news on the radio. The radio kept saying the word "republic" on the radio and Hassan was scared that it meant him and his father would have to move away. -
First encounter with Assef
Hassan asks Amir if he wants to go climb their tree. They go out to walk to their tree but they see a kid named Assef. Assef was a well known kid in the Wazir Akbar Khan section of Kabul. He is know for beating up kids with his stainless-steel brass knuckles. He walked towards Hassan and Amir and began to bother them. Amir told him to leave them alone so Assef was going to beat up Amir with his brass knuckles. Hassan took out his slingshot and threatened Assef so he said "this does not end today -
Hassan's Birthday
Hassan and Amir were playing in the yard, building a snow fort until Ali called them. He said that Baba wants to talk to Hassan. Amir and Hassan both knew it was for his present. They go inside to see an indian man named Dr. Kumar. Baba said that for his birthday Dr. Kumar is going to fix his cleft lip. The surgery goes well and Hassan thanks them for it and smiles. -
Kite fighting tournament and Hassan's rape
Its time for the Kite fighting tournament and it is being held in Amirs neighborhood. Amir believes he can win this year because he's a good kite fighter and was in the top 3 once. He wanted to win to impress Baba. Amir wins the kite tournament and Hassan tries to catch the last kite so Baba can be proud of Amir. Hassan catches the kite and Assef tries to get it from him. Hassan cant defend himself but he wont give up the kite so Assef tells his friends to hold him down and rapes Hassan. -

Amir and Babas relationship
"Baba and i were finally friends". After Amir won the kite fighting tournament and came home with the kite Hassan caught, Baba showed he was proud of him. Baba plans a trip to go to jalalabad with Amir. He tries to invite Hassan but he doesnt go out too much anymore and doesnt talk to Amir. Amir asks baba if he ever thought about getting new servants so baba gets mad at amir and their relationship is back to how it was before the tournament. -
Amirs Birthday gift
Amir got a watch from baba for his birthday. He wants Hassan to leave his house and he knows baba does not like people who steal so he comes up with a plan. He got his watch and planted it under hassans mattress. hassan lied and said he did so amir wont get in trouble but Baba forgives him. ali said that they are leaving them and baba and that they wont work for him anymore. Amir sees baba do something hes never seen him do before; he cried. ali and hassan left and amir never saw them again. -
Baba and Amir go to America!
Baba and Amir move to America because it is dangerous in Afghanistan because Russia had invaded it. Baba said that it was his final gift for Amir. Baba did not like America but he knew it was a good place for Amir. Amir had graduated and wanted to become a writer. Baba buys Amir a car and is proud of him and wishes Hassan was there. He also meets Soraya in America and falls in love with her. Amir and Baba had a good relationship while in america. -
Baba is diagnosed with lung cancer
Baba was diagnosed with Lung cancer and would not give the chemo a chance. Amir asks what was he supposed to do if he dies and Baba gets mad at him because that's what hes been trying to teach amir all those years. Since Baba is dying he asks him to asks Sorayas Father if they can visit them, and when they visit Baba asks if they can welcome Amir into their family. They were trying to get married as fast as possible because they knew Baba would die soon. -
Amir gets married
Wedding traditions in AfghanistanAmir marries Soraya. Soraya moves in with Amir and Baba and helps take care of Baba. -
Baba dies
Baba dies of lung cancer. At his funeral everyone tells Amir what a great guy his father was. -
Rahim Khan calls
Rahim Khan calls amir and tells him there is a way to be good again. He also tells them that he is very sick -
Amir goes to Pakistan
Amir goes to pakistan to talk to Rahim Khan. While talking to Rahim khan he learns a lot of things. He learns that Hassan had a wife and a kid and that Ali died. Rahim Khan tells him that the way to be good again is to save Hassans son, Sohrab. He tells him about how Hassan and his wife were murdered and Sohrab is an orphan so he has to save him. Amir says no so Rahim Khan finally tells him that Hassan is his brother. Amir gets angry but then agrees to help Sohrab just so he can be good again. -
Amir goes to Kabul
Harsh taliban punishmentsKabul had changed a lot because the taliban took over. There were certain rules you had to follow and if you didnt you could get killed or tortured. Amir had to find and save Sohrab. Later on he finds Sohrab and realizes that Assef had him. Assef says that if Amir fights him and wins he is free to go but if not he will kill him. Assef beats up Amir and he gets badly injured but Sohrab saves him by hitting assef in the eye with his slingshot. Amir and Sohrab get away. -
Amir takes Sohrab to America
It took a while for Amir to get Sohrab a visa. He said it would be easier if Sohrab can stay in an orphanage for a while but he was scared and cried. Soraya called Amir to tell him that she found an easy way and when Amir tried to tell Sohrab he saw that he tried to commit suicide. When Sohrab got out of the hospital Amir took him to america and he lived with Amir. Sohrab and Amir began to have a great relationship while in Pakistan and it remained that way in america.
