Tariff of Abominations
The 1828 Tariff of Abominations was the third protective tariff implemented by the government. The protective tariffs taxed all foreign goods, to boost the sales of US products and protect Northern manufacturers from cheap British goods. -
Indian Removal Act
The law authorized the president to negotiate with southern Native American tribes for their removal to federal territory west of the Mississippi River in exchange for white settlement of their ancestral lands. -
Cherokee Nation v. Georgia
The United States Supreme Court in Cherokee Nation v. Georgia ruled that the tribe did not possess original jurisdiction. This stance was based on Article III of the United States Constitution which viewed Native American tribes as domestic dependent nations and not sovereign nations. -
Worcester v. Georgia
On review of the case, the Supreme Court in Worcester v. Georgia ruled that because the Cherokee Nation was a separate political entity that could not be regulated by the state, Georgia's license law was unconstitutional and Worcester's conviction should be overturned. -
Force Bill
The Force Bill was passed by Congress on March 2, 1833, during the Nullification Crisis and authorized President Jackson to use military force against any state that resisted the protective tariff laws. -
Martin Van Buren is elected president
He won the 1836 presidential election with the endorsement of popular outgoing President Andrew Jackson and the organizational strength of the Democratic Party. -
Financial Panic
The Panic of 1837 was a financial crisis in the United States that touched off a major recession that lasted until the mid-1840s. Profits, prices, and wages went down while unemployment went up. -
Trail of Tears
In 1838 and 1839, as part of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, the Cherokee nation was forced to give up its lands east of the Mississippi River and to migrate to an area in present-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee people called this journey the "Trail of Tears," because of its devastating effects. -
Henry Harrison is elected president
Whig nominee William Henry Harrison defeated incumbent President Martin Van Buren of the Democratic Party. The election marked the first of two Whig victories in presidential elections. The Independent Treasury is established.
