The Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears was the after math of Andrew Jackson signing the indian Removal act Where the 5 tribes had to walk long distances. they called it the trail of tears because people from the tribes died from illnesses a cold temperatures on the way to Oklahoma. -
American Civil War
In 1861 the U.S. split and went to war (the Confederacy and Union), which caused them to choose a side so they sided with the confederacy. They sided with the confederates due to them owning slaves and to get back to the government for the harsh treatment but at the end they lost the war along with the confedrates. -
Indian reconstruction treaties
After the Civil War the 5 tribes in Oklahoma were forced to sign treaties to the U.S. government, taking away their slaves, giving up the western half of Indian territory, building railroads on Indian Territory, loss of sovereignty, loosing land, and having cattle Herds thru their territory. -
The Dawes Act
The Dawes act is when Native American reservations were split for future ownership, but natives on tribal roll could get land and the rest for white settlers.. this was to make white settlement more common -
Oklahoma land Rush
1889 when Indian land in Oklahoma was open for settlement there was a race for settlers to claim land on the sound of a gun. The settlers would have the land on their name after living there for 5 years. -
Indian Reorganization Treaties
In the Indian Reorganization Treaties they allowed the Natives to try to assimilate to white culture and allowed land back to them with their own constitution close to the U.S. one.
